Historical sources show that ancient ancestors of Georgians, Khets and Subars, which used to inhabit the region inflicted the double punishment on those who would kill the Georgian Nagazi. These people were using Georgian Shepherds in military activities, they used to terrorize the enemy. Georgian Nagazi used to bravely defend the territorial integrity of the country. The basic task of Georgian Shepherd is defending the sheep besides that he can manage other guarding activities as well.

Georgian Nagazi (so called Caucasian Shepherd) is naturally athletic and confident in his strength, psychologically balanced, intelligent and full of innate kindness. He is merciful and never bullies those weaker than him. However he is very dangerous for the strangers. In the fight Georgian Nagazi usually defeats the dogs of other breeds. It is the only dog in the world that can fight the wolf and usually he defeats the predator. There is a Georgian Nagazi named 'Tofusha' who has killed more then 60 wolves.

Georgian Shepherd is one of the oldest and unique breeds in the world. This breed got its name after Russian invasion in the Caucasus. The most prominent figure of Russian kinology A.Mazoveri states: "Compared to other regions in the Caucasus, this breed is most prevalent in Georgia, here you can find the best representatives of Georgian Nagazi. This aboriginal breed was originated in Georgia and its ancient name is "Georgian Nagazi".
